This is It!

I really want to thank this Cap program for the opportunity given to be an Intern, certainly it has been a learning experience and often humbling as well. This internship has allowed me to understand rural Saskatchewan, specifically the southwest in a much broader way and at the same time it has allowed me to position myself in the business environment networking and stuff.

My Supervisor Chelsey has been great and very supportive of the work that is being done here at the centre!

Next year will bring a new CAP student ( hopefully!) and that is going to allow the centre to keep reaching out to the community in ways that surpass the boundaries of a program such as the CAP, that is assisting with business registration, market research, business plan templates and off course the use of the computer as a business tool rather than as an entertaining one.

Tomorrow is my last day and I know its going to be crazy, so I wanted to make sure and express how much appreciation I have to the program co-ordinators for supporting this community and the entrepreneurial centre in such a unique way!

Thanks again and looking forward for what the future will bring!

There is always a light after the Tunnel

As my Internship as CAP comes to an end, the last few days have been like a roller coaster, but that is how life goes, one day you are in the verge of desperation, the following day the path is all cleared up.

This past week I had the opportunity to write a letter of reference for one of the young guys that came in a few weeks ago to do a workshop on entrepreneurs. He is trying to apply for a scholarship and go to school a few more months and I hope it works out for him.

At the Entrepreneurial Centre things are shaking for the good. We will soon be relocating our reception to a different part of the building and there is soooo much stuff to move, I wish I can trow a bunch of stuff, but off course its not up to me LOL....

Today I got a gentleman coming to seek advice for establishing his business, a restaurant. Him and his family are from pakistan, I have never tried Pakistani food, but sounds interesting!

The Cap Computers transit have been slow, a few people checking their e-mails and printing some stuff but that's it.

Louise Perrin, one of our Tenants got a great opportunity to be a marketing member in the Saskatchewan Craft Council, she was telling me how much of a big deal it is for someone to get there, so I thought it would be good to share the news in the blog.

Anyways the weekend is HERE! so I better start wrapping up here.

Have a good one!

The last few days

I realized I haven't typed here too much lately, I guess I talk too much and when it comes to typing and filling our hours at the end of the day is already time to go and sometimes I have even stayed later to fill this out.

Anyways the last few days have been busy here at the E-centre, I have helped quite a few people to log in and out this past few days, others have come looking to establish a business , to look in the business website (bizpal) about licenses and I have helped a gentlemen to research about help from the government if someone needs to establish a recycle company. Although we didn't find anything concrete, there was a few web pages that might have some leads for him.

Anyways, the last few things that I wanted to say is that I got my CAPYI backpack! its a nice one! Also that I might know tomorrow about a couple of options for employment that I will know tomorrow, so I am crossing fingers!

Anyways that's all for now!

See ya

My Friday

Today one of the plants that are at the E-centre showed us a HUGE beautiful flower, sign that spring may be coming soon! As well as the end of my Internship with the CAP program :-(

Today we also had a workshop from the Ministry of Education, so I had to assist with the video projector a couple of times LOL! All went good.

Other than that, the day has been really quiet, just a gentleman that design webpages, so he came to work on his laptop ( I didn't had to help him too much! ha ha)

Anyways the weekend is supposed to be quite warm so you better go out there and do some exercise!!!!

See you all Monday!

Oh Boy!

Oh Boy I realize I haven't been keeping updating this blog at all this week so I am just going to say whats been happening in the last few days here at the E-Centre.

Last Tuesday we had a Training Session, but I miss it because I went to an interview/ meting. I say it like that because the employer already knows me well enough, but still needed to interview me. I cant say too much details about it, but its related to economic development so I am very exited about that. Later that day I had a Guy from Colombia that came by to get information about starting a business, We also went in a couple of websites where he could get some more information about demographics and such in the southwest region. A few simple moms came by to use the computer as well.

Yesterday was busy, just a few people coming to make use of the Internet and such, but not a lot of training took place, Just logging in people and stuff. The receptionist was away so I also cover front desk for a while.

Today has been more quiet, I had to copy some CAP receipts and docs for Karen and fax them so that took most of my day. I believe only one person came and use the computers.

So that's my 3 days in a nutshell! Tomorrow I have to set up a video conference in one of the board rooms so we will see how that goes!

Business plan time

Today I helped a Gentleman with his business plan and some research. I believe he has an interview with some potential investors and was looking into making sure the business plan was accurate. His growth projections were not out of the ordinary and I help him do a graphic to add to his business plan for his financial ratios.

I also direct him to a couple of web pages that can assist him in getting some secondary market research for demographics, populations and target markets.

Hope he leaves the "dragon's Den" with he cash needed to start his business! I guess we will know by Friday hopefully.

The rest of the day has been calm, not too much traffic at the E-centre!

Technology and Science!

Its been a quiet day overall, two people came in to make use of the computer and check their e-mail. During Lunch, I had the chance to attend in the research station here in Swift Current a Symposium in technology and development, it was really good. The minister of Enterprise was also there and I got to sit in the same table! it was pretty cool. They asked me about Costa Rica ha ha...

Anyways that's the excitement of today for me, tomorrow is Friday and I am getting pump about the weekend because its supposed to be pretty nice weather!

My Wednesday

Today it was a slow day yet I got to help a couple of people and that made it a good day!
In total I think there was about 5 people using the CAP computers. A lady this morning was working on a flyer, so I help her with a simple one. But she is going to schedule a session so I can teach her how to use publisher and do a more elaborate flyer.

In the afternoon a young guy came in to research about starting a business, so I show him online how he needed to register, we also went to Bizpal, a good website where people can get a sense of licences and permit they might require depending of the nature of the business and what area they are looking to work in, so that took about an hour or so.

The last couple of days

The last couple of days have been relatively quiet here at the Centre. Yesterday I just have one person used the computers and today only two!...

Today we had a train session on Picnick and Glim , which are free photo editors, that was really cool, after the session I started to tweak a few pictures saved on the reception computer and made them look really neat.

Everything has been going well and as the end of the CAP program comes near, I am exploring different scenarios as far as Jobs goes... but they are secret for now ! As it happens so often that if you talk to much you might Jinx it!... just as when you point at a rainbow ( it disappears), so I will just sit tight !

See ya!

Teaching people

After the workshops that Community Futures did for new businesses in one of the boardrooms here at the centre, I helped the manager of community futures set up the video conferecing equipment, so I took a bit of advantage of the situation and told him about what the CAP program is and that we could help people like the audience in the workshop with different projects or tasks that surrounded the use of the computer.

That is why I got a young guy a few days ago working on his business cards. Well yesterday and today I have helped a couple of other people to design some flyer's for their business as well as fit in an ad that could go into the newspaper. I also helped a lady post on facebook some advertisement ( I think they charge a dollar a day) that could narrow the "hits" to a certain region, so in her case 100 kilometers around swift current.

Tomorrow is the women entrepreneurs luncheon were we will have a speaker talking about "first impressions don't come twice" so I am guessing I will be working on setting up the speaker equipment and other things after. We will see how it goes!

Monday and Tuesday!

So yesterday was the receptionist first day and it was a good day because I was able to concentrate more on CAP /e-centre duties. Karen my supervisor told me to help with the training so I help her understand how we use outlook for meetings, bookings and different accounts on the outlook express. She did very well and she is a fast learner.

Today I had the chance to participate in the training session about Adobe Photoshop and that was really cool. The funny thing is that not even an hour later a got a young fellow working on his business cards and was looking for some images to use, so I told him about the Stock Exchange site and other websites that Jeremy recommended me to use. So that was cool.

See you

My Thursday

Today It was an interesting day, I had a college student use our computer for her research paper, I guess because classes are on break this week she was home and needed to work on her stuff. One of our Cap computers is in a separate office, something that the E-centre calls it "a day office" were people can come and do their work, so I told her she could go there. I think she is coming back tomorrow.

Yesterday I got to the end of the train session! a client came in and was printing so much I had to bring her more paper, then she started telling me about her new business, finally I had to be polite and let her know that the printer needs to be used with consideration (she was printing quite a few pages!), I think she understood.

I also helped a lady how to do a cover letter for her resume. Finally I helped a lady do some scanning in the computer, so it worked out pretty good.

This week is a short week, and I am looking forward to the weekend!

Bye!

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Nice Day !

Today is been really nice outside, which probably is the reason why there wasn't too much traffic at the e-centre today! LOL, a relatively quiet day. A couple of fellows came by to inquiry about starting a business and were they could go to look for renting a place.

The Training session today was moved for tomorrow, so I am looking forward for that.

Apart from that, not too much going on here. The receptionist is no longer with the centre, so I've been keeping myself a bit busy answering the phones! ha ha... ( I already did that anyways!)

So hopefully , I've heard we will get another one soon, maybe next week?

Bye!

Its Friday!

Today is Friday and the holiday on Monday makes the weekend even better!

Not too much action have happened today or yesterday here at the E-centre, I helped a lady today to register her company, but we got frustrated because she wanted to do it online and for some reason the Website would not allow her, we even call corporations branch Saskatchewan for assistance and no one will pick up the phone! LOL... so we just decided to file it by mail instead, It takes longer... but oh well.

Anyways, I also won a backpack! from the CAP program! Visit the Cap program Website for cool wall papers and information on what is it that we do! www.capyi.com/sk

Have a good long weekend!

Webtrain Session day!

Today we had a training session on how to get the most out of google, that was quite interesting, specially for the marketing-value added that google had put to its service, making it not just another browser but actually enhancing the value of the services by adding calculators, google ad works and the "I'm feeling lucky" button.

This afternoon I had the chance to help a lady to build a cover letter, she was really grateful and I am hoping she comes back to learn more.

Good Monday

Today it was a busy day! I was actually glad about it because its been really quiet and slow last week.
I got to assist a lady into building her resume, and I train her how to use a flash drive as she was only familiar with the old "floppy", so that went well.

I also Assist a couple with a business name search and tough them how to create an account in the SK business and corporations branch website.

Finally I have been helping a young man with his business plan, he sent me his plan last Friday and I review it today for feedback and input, I also send him a couple of templates for an effecting cover letter for his plan.

Anyways, lets see what the day brings in tomorrow!

FUNDS!!!!! and Donations!

Hello!!

Yesterday the days was quick and slow, not too much went on, except that I was getting ready for the cheque ceremony.

So what cheque? Well, the E-centre got a grant from Farm Credit Union through the agri-spirit fund, and its going to be destined to building improvements and common space. That's a really big thing, because the E-centre is a non-profit organization without any core governmental fund, so our budget allow us to operate but not necessarily to update the building. We get the support of the Industry Canada through the Cap program and tenants like Enterprise Saskatchewan and Community Futures play a big role in helping us stay afloat.

So as a CAP it was a great experience to be part of the Check Ceremony, I got to do a press release for the media and follow up with them... don't know if Its a big deal or not but I got all three medias ( Radio, Local TV news and Newspapers) to cover the story. Ivan the chairman of the board received the funds on behalf of the E-centre.

Anyways, it was pretty cool. So the centre will now be able to provide better services for commuters and businesses in general, which also benefits a lot through this CAP program!

We also got a donation of an educational book, to put on the resource library! So I thought that was neat as well!.

Awesome! I am glad I am part of this!

See ya!

Cleaning Day

Today we had a webtrain session on how to use available freeware and free goodies that can be found in the Internet! So that was great! specially the $25 Gift certificate from Staples! I can really use that to purchase my tax return software!

Anyways, I was expecting Chelsey to come by but the roads were kind of iffy so she choose to re-schedule, so I thought about cleaning a bit the computers and neat up the place.

The E-centre is receiving a grant for building improvements on Thursday so I am also helping setting up the cheque ceremony, that although is going to be only 30 minutes, it sure takes work to do press releases and stuff... its pretty cool though, you learn a lot about how to do stuff.

Anyways, I play soccer tonight (indoor) so I am exited!

See ya

Friday!! Again!!

Today was a good day! I got to research a bit about municipalities int he South West region, as I was helping a client get when their counsil board meetings where scheduled.

In the afternoon I helped a Gentleman with his business plan! that was very cool because I like stuff like that and being influential helping someone that may receive funding for a business start up is a great feeling. He was a bit stuck on the financial data and on what exactly is a marketing plan. so we went over the specifics on his business plan... took us like 2 hours but I think he left quite happy.

I started to write my success story for January this morning... and I got carried away!... sooo... I apologize for that! I will finish it off tomorrow and mail it to Chelsey this weekend.

Anyways! enjoy the weekend !

E-centre Happenings

Its been a really busy couple of days at the E-centre, just in general, so much that I couldn't fill in my blogger everyday! so I am going to tell a bit of what happened in the last couple of days.

Tuesday we had a websession training, it was really short but very interested, I had no idea you had to submit your domain in order to be added to search engines! that was really cool. I wrote a success story on PX2 and the impact of that program for the Cap Program.

Yesterday I had the chance to clean ( dust wise) and disinfect the cap computers, so that is part of adding value to the services we provide right?

The E-centre has a lot of traffic coming through every day, for different reasons, we are kind of like a "one stop to shop" deal, where new businesses and other commuters come for information and also to use our printers, computers and such. So that kept me really busy Today, I also attended during lunch a leadership seminar, featuring Peter Fassbender, Major of the city of Langley B.C. He shared his life story as well as other good points to be a better leader, it was really good.

Anyways! there you have it... in a nut shell... for some reasons it seems like I do a lot more than what I actually type! ha ha...

Cheers!

After the storm!

Oh Boy! Have I ever seen this much snow? My driveway this morning was covered in snow, with snowbanks up to my shoulders... I had waken up early to clean my driveway, but was of little help, since the roads where covered in two feet of snow as well!

Nevertheless I made it to the E-centre in one piece. As the City of Swift Current goes around cleaning the streets and our parking lots ( if we are lucky), I don't expect too much folks to come to the CAP centre.

I did helped one of our small business incubator clients with her files. She needed to print a form in the Internet, but her computer did not had any printer installed and putting the drivers of our CAP printer to her laptop wasn't my first choice.

So I basically teach her how to do a print screen, then save the image to a JPEg format, save her on a flash drive and print the page in one of our printers, she was pretty happy about that because she was filling up some important forms and didn't wanted to loose the information.

So that was cool and she left happy, which is the most important.

Apart from that the centre has been quiet. I am also working on my success story for January.

Hopefully we wont get as much snow anymore this winter ( Phew!!) and tomorrow we will get some more clients to come.

Good Bye!

Getting Ready Curling

Perhaps you know about it but march 20 to the 28th is the World Championship competition of curling, and it will hosted here in SWIFT!!

I think that is pretty neat, today I had the chance to print and help fold some fliers that will be used for the curling world championship, so that is very exited.

In the afternoon the lady that came in a few days ago to work on some financial statements came by again and was looking for some help now with cash flow statements and to see if I could help her with some formulas on the excel spreadsheet, so I did and she was really happy. I guess if you really think about it, working on formulas in excel without knowing too much about it can be a pain. I am hoping she learned a bit, and sounds like it because she was able to figure it out the rest of the formulas as I explained her. So that was cool.

Anyways! Time to go!

Training Session

Yesterday was our Training session, I actually think Jeremy was annoyed by all my questions ha ha, but that just proof that I was paying attention!

Last week the training was on NVU, a what you see is what you get type of online software to design webpages and templates. This week however we learned about a different program, which is a more completed website builder, here you can actually do more pages, add videos, pictures and the cool thing about, is that anyone can go an access the website without having to register, I think it uses sub-domains.

Anyways that was very interesting, so I am trying to find time to play with the software and get to know it better.

Bye!

E-centre Hapenings

The week has started a bit slow but today it picked up.

Yesterday ( Monday) there was not too many people that came to use the cap computer, only one of our small business girl to check her e-mail. So most of the day I spend it catching up on cleaning some files and sorting out information in binders LOL.

Despite of not having a Webtrain session today ( those are always fun) a lady came in to use our cap computers as she was touching up some financial statements for her business. Turns out she had saved the old file in our CAP computer and couldn't find it ( I thought I had remove it without knowing who's it was to clean up space) so she freak out about that, not in a bad way, just sad. Luckily for her I had made a back up of files in the computer and had that file on a flash drive.

So I thought her how to safe files and attached to her personal e-mail ( send to herself) that would allow her to carry the document in the E-mail server without needing a flash drive. So she did what she needing to work on, printed her statements and I guide her into sending that e-mail... she left quite happy! and that's a good thing!

See ya tomorrow!

Training Session!

Almost forgot!

Today after a couple of days of delay, we got our training session, which was probably a great one! It was about making your own website. Jeremy used NVU as the software for WYSIWYG ( what you see is what you get) program that helps develop web pages!

I even learned about free web hosting places ( to host your web page online and domain) which I thought was very interesting, specially because web hosting companies can charge from 9 to 25 dollars a month for a basic web site.

I actually got to share the information to a client ( as I was in the training), because she needed info on how to create a web page, so that was pretty neat. Hopefully I will get a hold of the tutorial so I can pass it along to her.

You should come to the E-centre and I will be glad to share this information with you!

Bye!!!

Cap Computer Online

The CAP 01 computer in boardroom 1 is now Online! It took me a while to figure it out because the port on the computer class room was not labeled, so I could not find it in the router network... unless of course I tried all the ports until I found one... and that seemed to do the trick after an hour or so!!!

So the good news is that the computer is online is fully operating, which will assist single mothers that come with their kids for family resource centre to access e-mails and online information!

Friday, January 8, 2010

Friday!

Its exiting to be able to help young people progress.
I got a gentleman today that stopped by to use the E-centre fax machine to send out some Faxes, after establishing a conversation I realized he was faxing what seemed to be copies of his certificates on construction and new pipes, along with a note on the top right corner saying
"For references and info call xxx-xxx-xxxx ( phone number).

He was looking for a job and was faxing his resume. I felt horrible because I didn't want him to feel stupid, but I explained him what a resume was and how that could make a difference, make it easier for him to explain what he can do and for the employer to look at.

So we went to the CAP computer, open up MSO and I find the Resume Wizard for him. I think he left pretty happy and I am sure he will get a call. He had about 5 years experience and 20 certifications in both Alberta and Saskatchewan... I am hoping someone in the South East region hires him.

Have a good weekend!

Computer Literacy!

As I sit here typing , I realize that I write faster in a computer keyboard than in a notepad... I am more comfortable holding a computer mouse than holding a pen.

There is a good chance that if you are reading this, you have some hands-on computer experience. However, there is a difference between surfing the Internet and being computer literate...

When I was in my freshman year at university in the United States, I was shocked when I saw juniors and seniors who did not knew and did not know how to upload or download an email attachment and operate a simple Windows based program. "How is that possible?" I thought, "I came from a less developed country, never thought I would find this in the U.S...

In most places of business, a computer is standard nowadays... its used in banks, auto repair shops, retailers, doctors offices, to pay your utilities, airports...etc. Employers now don't care if you know Microsoft Word or Excel, they want to know what version you know ( MSO 2000, XP, 2003 or 2007... ) ...

Want to become more familiar with these programs???? Basic computer courses are offered at the E-Centre every day! You don't have a computer? Don't worry, you can come and use our Free CAP computers. We are offering you the tools to become more competitive, so please use them and please don't take this for granted.
